10s 10s 10s across the board!

I cannot believe I am saying this, but guess this is the final edition............ that we are keeping count. After 10 editions, it is clear that we are here for good. And who's counting anyway?

THE MUSTS

Economy & Business

green is the new black

Big banks are making big profits from sustainable projects

For the second consecutive year, banks worldwide have earned more from granting loans for sustainable projects than from financing fossil fuel initiatives.

The world's leading financial institutions garnered $3 billion through environmentally friendly loans. In contrast, projects linked to oil, gas, and coal amounted to $2.7 billion in lending.

Fun fact: ING was the first bank to link financing to how well a company performs on sustainability. Where ‘traditional’ green financing is used to fund projects with clear climate benefit, sustainability-linked loans incentivise companies to take action to lower their own environmental impact by offering them more favourable loan rates if they meet pre-agreed sustainability targets.

A global division. The bulk of these funds was concentrated in Europe, where hefty fines are imposed on banks that fail to engage with sustainable projects. In the US, on the other hand, only a handful of states impose sanctions on polluting businesses, hence fossil fuel initiatives still dominate investment portfolios there.

🍃 Focus on Energy Transition: The big picture

The aim is to support the Paris Agreement's goals: Capping the global temperature rise at a maximum of 1.5°C and facilitating an annual $100 billion funding stream from developed to developing nations for climate change countermeasures.

Culture & Life

mon talent sportif est comme ma connaissance du français: inexistant

Bonjour, Paris!

After 100 years, the Olympic Games return to the "City of Light" for a particularly special event, which will be set to commence in an unprecedented manner quite different from the traditional one we are used to seeing.

Mark your calendar: This year's Olympic Games kick-off will be on the River Seine on July 26th, a fresh twist on the traditional stadium-based opening ceremonies. This open-air procession is anticipated to attract a crowd 10 times bigger than the size of a standard venue, with the added perk of complimentary viewing for many.

  • Over 10,000 competitors will be part of a nautical procession, showcasing the participating nations as they navigate through Paris's historic heart via its iconic river.

  • There will be 32 sports and 48 disciplines contested between July 24th and August 11th, with new events including: breakdancing, surfing — which will be held in Tahiti — and extreme canoe slalom.

Around 10 million tickets will be sold for the games, leading to inflation in hotel and restaurant prices in the area. It is expected that the cost for a hotel night will be 475% higher than usual, averaging 700 euros.

What else is on:
  • Oscar Nominations 2024: ‘Oppenheimer’ Dominates With 13 Nods, ‘Poor Things’ Follows With 11 and Margot Robbie left the groupchat.

  • Coachella Line-up 2024: The biggest music festival in the world annunced its attractions with Doja Cat, Ludmilla, Lana del Rey and more.

  • Brand maker. How TikTok went from viral silly dances to the kingmaker of brands for gen z.

  • The Resale Revolution: Companies are reselling their own products, particularly in the fashion industry, as a way to introduce them to younger generations.

Technology

Get in loser, we’re going ChatGPT shopping

This could be the internet's most impactful creation

OpenAI finally unveiled their version of an "App Store" last week, a platform where paying users of ChatGPT can share their own custom bots, known as GPTs, or download others’ for free. If you thought ChatGPT was a huge leap for mankind, this new venture might be an even bigger one.

The store was initially set to launch in November but was delayed amid the Sam Altman–OpenAI board drama, already mentioned in past editions.

Why is this significant? Cast your mind back to 2008 when Apple launched its App Store, essentially creating a brand-new marketplace. This platform enabled individuals to profit by selling apps for the iPhone.

  • Think about the success stories: Duolingo, WhatsApp, Uber, Airbnb... The list is nearly endless. The expectation for the GPT Store follows a similar trajectory—a marketplace for applications built using ChatGPT.

If the GPT Store takes off, we might witness one of the largest transformations in our generation's history. To put it in perspective, the App Store generated over $643 billion for the global economy in 2020 alone. That's a staggering amount of money.

Fun fact: To publish an app in the AppStore, you need to develop an app with code and still be approved by Apple. To build your own GPT, users don't need code or ChatGPT approval. Choices.

What else is on:
  • With sugar? A robot has learned to make coffee just by watching a human. For the first time in human history nobody had to go and program it or teach it directly, it was all "watch and learn" .

  • 50 Years Without Charging Your Phone? Well tanamesers, a nuclear battery capable of generating electricity for 50 years is just out of the oven. The plan is to produce them at scale so that they can be used in the aerospace sector, AI equipment, micro-robots, medical devices etc.

  • Driving and charging, charging and driving. A street that charges the vehicles as they drive by has been opened in Detroit and has become the first of its kind. The "electric streets" could put an end to the problem of having to find a place to charge the vehicles. The idea is to expand to the whole city and then lately to the rest of the country.

Movies - Italian Edition

quello che adesso è “di nessuno”, può sempre diventare “di tutti”

La Chimera by Alice Rohrwacher: This is one of the most beautiful movies I’ve seen in a while. It’s a poetic exploration of the fragile beauty of life and the ease with which it can vanish, with a narrative that forgoes strict structure for a more free-flowing dreamscape.

Synopsis: The film presents an existential journey through the eyes of Arthur, an Englishman portrayed by Josh O’Connor. He and his group of friends are tomb-robbers (tombaroli), searching for treasures in Etruscan tombs - which metaphorically mirrors our quest to discover life's hidden gems amidst chaos.

Reflecting on the film's thematic, we’re invited to ponder our own relationship with our past and the manner in which we cherish and safeguard life's ephemeral treasures. Arthur's journey with his band straddle the line between modern-day Robin Hoods, with a great mix of cultural exchanges and casualties of societal neglect. Beautiful. (Rating 10/10)

C'è ancora domani by Paola Cortellesi: While deeply rooted in Italian societal norms, the essence of feminism and women’s rights of this movie will resonate with everyone - I could not watch the movie and not think about my mother and her own history (hi mom!), giving the whole experience a truly personal touch.

The film unfolds like a revelation, surprising and captivating its audience, while also igniting deep reflection. With a hybrid genre, mixing the intensity of drama with the levity of comedic gags and characters, the film maintains a balance that leaves the audience profoundly satisfied as they exit the theater. (Rating: 9/10)

Fun fact: 'There's Still Tomorrow' marks Cortellesi's debut as a director, having garnered three awards at the Rome Film Festival, and it stands as 2023's most successful Italian box office hit.

Tanamesa launch dinner - September 2023’

Hii!!

I'm thrilled to introduce the inaugural edition of this incredibly special project. I can’t believe this is finally happening and thank you so much for having subscribed.

Do you remember this? It seems like a lifetime ago, yet it's been just 10 editions! I can still vividly recall sitting at the airport, and drafting that first issue while waiting for my flight. Back then, I was immersed in choosing color palettes, designing the logo, and even crafting those quirky AI videos. Until the release party, this journey was a very lonely one, filled with questions and insecurities.

But everything changed after the first edition went live. It ceased to be just my journey - it became ours. And many of you have left your mark on this project in one way or another.

  • So far, thanks to your active contributions, we've refreshed the colors of our links, introduced new sections, streamlined the newsletter for conciseness, added a subscription button for easy sharing and so much more. And let me tell you tanamesers, this party is just getting started.

So Micael: Where do we stand, and where are we headed?

Initially, I had two main goals: To actively listen to your feedback making constant improvements and to embed the habit of newslettering into my routine. As we discussed on the last edition, creating habits is tough, and maintaining them even tougher - so creating a dedicated space for 'Tanamesa' in my life and honoring our bi-weekly encounter was cardinal in this first moment.

Honestly, it's still a work in progress. Which is totally fine! Some editions flow more freely than others, and at times, it is not easy. But here we are 😋

Looking forward, I'm studying ways to boost my productivity in writing and content creation — a backstage effort that might not be visible to you but is crucial nonetheless. Greater efficiency without sacrificing quality means more time for other Tanamesa activities — perhaps even venturing into establishing a social media presence. One can dream, right?

In closing, my vision for 'Tanamesa' was to create a space where I could share my thoughts freely and without reservation. I've always strived to portray a perfect life facade, and I was not expecting that opening up about my vulnerabilities, past struggles or contemplations could be so unexpectedly therapeutic. Your every response, even the briefest comment on social media, has made me feel heard and loved. Thank you for fostering this dialogue and sharing your perspectives.

'Tanamesa' is still an ongoing narrative, and your participation is still essential. I'm filled with gratitude for this shared journey so far, and I look forward to writing our next chapters together. (totally cheesy but completely true).

With lots and lots of love,

Micael.
