The year of the rematch

It's time for an encore. In 2024, the world's gaze will once again turn to the U.S. presidential elections, set to take place on November 5th. However, the process has already kicked off, with potential candidates gearing up for the primary elections, where Republican and Democratic voters choose their representatives.

Signs point to a rematch between Biden and Trump. In 2020, the Democrat won with 306 electoral college votes. It's important to remember that in the U.S., it's the state-by-state victories that count.

  • What do the polls say? The latest from The New York Times showed Trump leading in five of the six most pivotal states in the election—states that Biden had won in the previous contest.

The economy is the current president's Achilles' heel, with high rates of inflation and interest. Biden also faces skepticism about the prospect of starting a second term at the age of 81.

On the other hand… Trump has become the first former U.S. president to be indicted, facing four criminal cases. The opposition is expected to ramp up criticism on this front.

Things to watch: The Supreme Court will need to make a call on Trump's eligibility, as two states, Colorado and Maine, have determined he shouldn't be allowed to run for president. In practice, this would prevent voters in those areas from having the option to vote for Trump—his name wouldn't appear on the ballot.

making preditions as if I knew something

Yes, AI is expected to continue its presence. But beyond that, the potential for new business ventures will be found in every corner — especially among apps that don't seem to have this as their primary purpose at first glance.

  1. Less "social" networks. With the surge of short videos, DM interactions may be slightly pushed aside. At the same time, dedicated messaging platforms — like Whatsapp — will gain momentum.

  2. TikTok on the superapp quest. Moving beyond dance trends, TikTok is poised to compete with Amazon in the shopping domain and become the primary app for Gen Z's daily use.

  3. The influence of China. With every online purchase, Chinese giants such as Alibaba and Shein are gaining more ground. The trend is expected to accelerate—including the entry of new players.

  4. Google enters the ring. With Bard more integrated into other content, Google is likely to leverage its 85 billion visits per month to steer a good number of them towards its AI model.

  5. Second-screen and long videos. Content requiring full attention may lose ground to those that can be consumed while doing something else— like cooking, washing dishes, driving, and so on…

  6. Easy fashion. This year consumers are likely to consider the number of times they will wear a garment when they make a purchase. This means finding classic pieces that will last years of wear and tear, since they are more likely to look good as fashion trends come and go.

Happy Dance GIF by Mickey Mouse
Mickey is letting loose!

Nearly 95 years after the birth of the world's most famous mouse duo, Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Disney is starting to lose copyright protection on them.

In essence, anyone now has the legal right to use the characters in new works, as long as they are based on the "Steamboat Willie" versions and not the nearly a century of animated evolution that followed.

The copyright was due to expire 20 years ago, but Disney convinced the US Congress to increase the term of protection for works from 75 to 95 years after creation. Now there's no escape...

Money does not sleep: Despite only three days since this release...

  • A new video game has already turned Mickey into a bloodthirsty private detective battling a corrupt city filled with criminals in a game called MOUSE.

  • A new horror movie, "Mickey Mouse Trap," has launched its trailer, featuring Mickey in a sinister game of survival, terrorizing a group of friends.

But Mickey isn't alone. Winnie the Pooh also got the horror movie treatment soon after its copyrights expired last year. Pluto, Goofy, Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and others are set to enter the public domain in the next decade.

To reflect: One of the significant advantages legacy media companies have over all their notable challengers is their content libraries. And for those struggling with streaming, social media, the creator economy, generational shifts, "losing" their most valuable assets could be the final blow.

What else is on:
  • Atomic blonde. Taylor Swift is the solo artist with the most weeks at number one on the Billboard charts, after overtaking none other than Elvis Presley.

  • A special night in Hollywood: Check the winners of the Golden Globe awards for the best in TV and film.

  • Nothing Compares 2 U. Irish singer Sinead O’Connor died from natural causes.

EDITOR’S RECOMMENDATIONS

Movies

sick, savage and satisfying

Saltburn by Emerald Fennell: Saltburn" is an intoxicating blend of classic influences and contemporary edginess, bringing the beauty of "Brideshead Revisited" and one of my personal favorites "The Talented Mr. Ripley" all while carrying the hallmark of a modern erotic thriller.

As "Saltburn" goes into the treacherous waters of attraction and repulsion, it becomes a thrilling ride that's as sick, savage, and satisfying as it is a clever critique of the elite. All while daring to edge of self-aware queer comedy. I also have to comment the standout performance of Rosamund Pike as Elspeth, whose wit and casual cruelty steal every scene she's in. (Rating 8/10)

Music

we’re less like gods but more like plants

Playpen by Juliet Ivy: Have you ever stop what you were doing to wonder how will indie pop music sound for the next generation? If you are like me, probably not. However, combining adult subject matter with playful lyrics and mellow melodies, this 22-year-old New Yorker might answer the question.

Juliet is an artist that I’ve found through a viral song on Tiktok and I was truly impressed by her pot of cultural references, clearly putting a Gen Z twist on our traditional genres. Songs that I recommend giving a try (in the EP or beyond) are we’re all eating each other, lug, ZOOM, and breakfast song.

For those that like Kenya Grace, beabadoobee, Ariana Grande, Jhené Aiko, and discovering new artists in general. (Rating 7/10)

Happy New Years for us!

As the new year starts, we're often caught crafting resolutions or setting targets for the year:

  • "I'll be reading every single day..."

  • "This year, I'll start a new business..."

  • "From Monday on, I'm going to the gym four times a week..."

But let’s be honest: The energy that fuels these promises tends to finish quite fast. How often do we catch ourselves waiting for the stars to align? For that perfect day when we're brimming with energy, confidence, and time? Sorry to tell you babe, but these days might not come. And waiting for them can be our downfall.

With life's chaos — juggling work, family, relationships and the unexpected— it's easy to craft excuses rather than honoring our promises. Fatigue sets in, stress mounts, and yet, through it all, there's a voice that must rise above everything:

✨ DISCIPLINE ✨

Often misconstrued as a rigid structure, discipline actually holds a special kind of freedom — the freedom to create, to achieve, and to become who we want to be. But how do we plant the seeds of discipline into our lifes?

2. Cultivating Discipline:

In Jocko Willink's book "Discipline Equals Freedom" , he explained something that reasonated with me deeply, echoing the lessons I've learned in my own life: Discipline isn't about restriction; it's the pathway to achieving our dreams. When I think about the scholarships I was offered, the opportunities I was given or even my body and how I was trying to get a bit bigger last year, discipline was the crucial factor between success or shortfall.

Another useful brain trick that I use a lot in my life (particularly when I have to go to the gym before work or create gigantic spreadsheets in my job) is "The 5 Second Rule" from Mel Robbins — a deceptively simple yet powerful tactic. You basically just prepare mentally and make an agreement to count down from five and then just do it — whatever "it" is that needs to be done— and it really pushes us past our procrastinations. - it’s science!

3. Sustaining Discipline:

For me, sustaining discipline is all about celebrating the small victories and tracking progress. Breaking down my goals into achievable milestones allows me to enjoy each step forward. And again, science backs this up: a sense of progress is intricately linked to our happiness and sense of fulfillment.

It's also crucial to understand that discipline is intertwined with self-love. Would you stand your friend up if you had promised to meet them? Then why would you do that to yourself and the gym session you've committed to? It's about showing up for yourself with the same dedication you'd show for others. This is crucial because I see so many of you showing up and being amazing friends, supporting no matter what the people you love but forgetting to do the same with yourself.

I hope this message resonates with you somehow and perhaps sparks a new perspective on discipline in your life.

Happy goal setting, and remember: Every day is a fresh chance to turn it all around.

With love,

Micael.
